Avineon Helps Raise Funds and Awareness to Support the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Survivors Benefit Fund
Annual Meredith Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament assists family members of DEA employees killed in the line of duty
Alexandria, Va. – Sept. 13, 2006 – Avineon, Inc., a successful provider of IT, geospatial, engineering and program management services, today announced its third year sponsoring the Meredith Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Survivors Benefit Fund (SBF). The fund was created to gather and distribute funds for the benefit of surviving family members of DEA employees killed in the line of duty. Since 1997, the SBF has disbursed more than $1.1 million to surviving families including scholarships and educational grants. The golf event, hosted by the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Association of Former Federal Narcotics Agents (AFFNA), is in its ninth year and has raised more than $300,000 over the past five years.
“Avineon has a longstanding relationship with the DEA on both a professional and humanitarian level,” said Karlu Rambhala, president and CEO of Avineon. “Sponsoring this event is a small way to show our support and work to help provide financial resources for surviving families to maintain adequate housing, meet living expenses and provide their children with educational opportunities.”
The DEA enforces controlled substance laws and regulations and targets for prosecution organizations involved in growing, manufacturing or distributing controlled substances destined for illicit traffic in the United States. Its 5,000 agents have established an outstanding reputation by investigating and arresting the most notorious and dangerous drug criminals throughout the United States and the world. In this war against drugs, assaults against DEA agents occur 16 times more frequently than against all other federal agents. The death of DEA agents resulting from these assaults sometimes results in severe financial hardship for surviving families.
The annual golf tournament is held in memory of Special Agent Meredith Thompson, a Fairfax, Va. native, who was killed in the line of duty in 1994. Teams from both industry and government tee off on Friday, Sept. 15, 2006 at the Bull Run Country Club in Haymarket, Va. with an awards luncheon, raffle and prizes following tournament play.
